800 Block of Texas Avenue
For much of the first half of the Twentieth Century, the 800 block of Texas Avenue in downtown Shreveport served as the gateway to “the Avenue,” a five-block stretch of minority-owned businesses including restaurants, entertainment venues, legal and medical offices, a newspaper, and more. Several destinations located within Shreveport Common were among the venues that contributed to the vibrant culture of “the Avenue” including the Calanthean Temple, Antioch Baptist Church, and Shreveport Municipal Auditorium. The Avenue, under the name Texas Avenue Historic District, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Today the 800 block of Texas Avenue is one of the central thoroughfares of Shreveport Common, from which visitors can explore Caddo Common Park, ASEANA Asian Gardens of Shreveport, Central ARTSTATION, and The Church of the Holy Cross.
